Your self-image is how you view yourself. For too many of us, however, our self-image is plagued by negativity. We see ourselves as too shy, too stupid, too fat, too skinny, too selfish…and in many cases these images are not based in reality. While we all have our faults, we tend to amplify those faults and even create faults that we do not even have. This is especially true if we were bullied or experienced trauma during our childhoods.
A negative self-image can make us insecure and more susceptible to mental health issues such as depression or anxiety. Thankfully, by fostering a more positive self-image, we can learn to see ourselves in a better light. Here’s how:
Watch your thoughts
How we talk to ourselves often influences how we see ourselves. While we all have an inner critic, it’s important not to let that inner critic get too loud. We believe that being hard on ourselves will motivate us to improve ourselves, but in fact the opposite is true. Self-compassion is more effective than self-criticism when it comes to improving our lives.
Give yourself a break
Many people who struggle with a negative self-image often also struggle with perfectionism. But nothing in life is perfect, including ourselves. In fact, mistakes are one of the primary ways we grow and learn. It’s important to give yourself permission to make mistakes and to understand that you still have worth even if you mess up every now and then.
Try not to compare yourself to others
Comparing ourselves to others is almost impossible to avoid. Nevertheless, you can cut down on how often you do it. To build a more positive self-image, focus on what you have accomplished, not what other people have accomplished. Remind yourself that things are often different behind the scenes, and that a successful person has their own struggles, too.
Develop a positive body image
Body image is a large part of self-image, especially for women. The entire world tells us that, no matter our body types, we are not enough. But the truth is that every body type is beautiful. Embracing your body for what it is and learning to love what you see in the mirror can go a long way in improving your self-image.
